Media Analysis on a Daily Mail article

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-13028501/kourtney-kardashian-travis-barker-surrogate-baby-pregnancy-rocky.html

This article on the Daily Mail is about Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker discussing using a surrogate for their second child after she had a difficult pregnancy with Travis Barker. They mention how the Kardashians underwent emergency surgery. This is, I believe, soft news due to this article not being as important as others.

A few news values that this article shows me are references to elite people, entertainment, good news, and surprise. The reason I think they bring these news values is because the Kardashians are celebrities that are talked about a lot in the media. whether it may be what shampoo Kim Kardashian uses or if one of them is dating another celebrity. A lot of pop culture fans will be interested in that; it is for and represents a particular audience. It’s in the entertainment category and isn’t the most important news. Therefore, there could also be a surprise element in this article because no one expected them to announce that. The format of the article is in a traditional journalistic way, and the way they talk about these celebrities is by using anonymous sources and maybe even false information. The Daily Mail is sometimes not an accurate news company to go to due to claims that there are false narratives that are created about big celebrities over the internet. There are a lot of advertisements on the article page to lure you to other things; it’s not in the best clear format but is still readable.

Taylor Wessing Photo Portrait Prize Review

Visiting the Taylor Wessing photo portrait prize exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery was very interesting. With the diverse selection of photographs, each one of them told a story just by looking at the picture for a minute. In the first picture below, there is a piece by Phillippa James. She photographed her 14-year-old daughter and her friends on there phones together. This demonstrates how social media has shaped the younger generation and how their enjoyment of technology has become a necessity due to its rapid advancement. . In the caption, they touch on having discussions on sexual or verbal harassment, sexism, and victim blaming. These young girls are unfortunately the main target for those things because of social media.

‘no big deal’ by Philippa James.

‘Mums Engagement Dress’ :

The next photograph I found interesting was ‘Mums Engagement Dress’. The British photographer Cara Price lost her mother to breast cancer when she was 15. She kept quite a few belongings from her mother, including her mother’s engagement dress. By wearing the dress and photographing it, Cara felt a sense of comfort and felt more connected to her mother, which I found truly touching. She explains how it was ‘revisiting old memories’ and ‘seeking closure’; it was inspiring to see her share her story in such a creative way. It has a clear message, and I completely understand why it was nominated in the first place.

‘Mums Engagement Dress’ By Cara Price.

Overall, I found quite a lot of the pieces inspiring, but these were my top 2. I understood both photographs easily, whereas with some, I didn’t fully understand and had to refer to the caption. There were so many categories within the competition, which made it unique and extremely creative. I have realised that one picture can tell so many different stories.

The making of Maya Jama

Maya from a Vogue shoot in August 2023.

Maya Jama was born on August 14th, 1994, in Bristol. She is a well-known half-Swedish and Somalian DJ, TV presenter, and radio host. Jama grew up in the city of Bristol for most of her life, until she began to start building her career in London at the age of 16, where she would take opportunities anywhere Maya could to pursue her broadcasting career and to get her foot in the door of the presenting world as well. She started off by creating her own YouTube channel and landed her first presenting job at JumpOff TV. While building her way up, she then moved on to host MTV’s The Wrap-Up, following on to MTV News.

In a Vogue Youtube video, Maya Jama rates her Instagram photos from the very start of her career. In a segment of this video, Maya shares that “I was definitely a performance child.” and explains how she would put on performances in her childhood living room for all of her family members to watch and that she would make fake tickets for her performances. Maya Jama then carried on her career at Rinse FM from 2014–2017.

During the time she worked at Rinse, she had different guests on when she was on air from 4 to 7 p.m. on weekdays. One of the guests she had on her show was the now-successful British rapper who goes by the name of Stormzy. They both became good friends on the show and eventually started dating. They dated for 4 years until they split in August 2019. It’s been recently reported that they are now back together after being seen together multiple times from mid-2023 to the present.

The rise of her career has given her so many more big opportunities, from being a panellist on ITV’s Loose Women to now hosting the dating series Love Island and Love Island Allstars. During the vogue recap Youtube video previously mentioned above, Maya talks about how even though she has been given these big opportunities, she says, “Growing up in a nonconventional way, you can think that you don’t belong in certain spaces sometimes, or that you would never be accepted.” Maya has become so successful that her net worth is a whopping £1.5 million. She has been the face of Dolce & Gabbana, has been on the cover of Vogue multiple times, and has become an inspiration for many other women in the presenting industry.

Downed by a drone: US Airways plane crashes in the River Thames after drone collision

At 2:30 p.m. this afternoon, a social media account reported a US Airways plane that had crashed into the River Thames near Rainham Marshes. This occurred as a result of an engine failure brought on by a drone collision, which made the aircraft land in the water.

The social media app called ‘X’, formally known as Twitter, user @thamestweets posted a picture of the plane crash, which immediately caught the attention of the public, but most importantly, emergency services from all surrounding areas. The picture also showed passengers being transferred from the plane to lifeboats.

It had been confirmed that the radar contact was lost with flight US132 at 2:31 p.m. At that time, the flight had just taken off from London City Airport and was set to arrive in Amsterdam; unfortunately, that was not the case in this instance. The pilot on board reported an engine failure and didn’t have enough power left to return to the starting point, which left the pilot no choice but to try and land in the water.

Officers eventually showed up at the scene, including the RNLI lifeboat from Gravesend. Meanwhile, passengers were exiting the plane and making their way on the wings and life rafts on the aircraft.

A passenger tweeted not long after the incident, by the name of Nadine Johnson, about her experience on the aircraft during that time. She mentioned that she did not expect to be standing on the wing of an aircraft in the middle of the Thames on her birthday. Nadine then continued to thank the pilot for getting her down from the wing safe and sound. The Airways staff report says there were 42 passengers and 6 crew members on board; all survived, with only two passengers having minor injuries.

It was also reported that a passenger in the accident was rushed to Queens Hospital after a supposed heart attack. Essex police and ambulance services, along with the Purfleet Heritage and Military Centre, took care of all the passengers. Food and drink were provided, and they also had access to call there relatives, and arrangements were made to make sure everyone returned home safely. The BTP has investigated reports from flight US132 to find that after the collision, there were original reports of a birdstrike, but what was found was drone debris when the engines of the plane were examined.
